Looper

In 2072, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, the target is sent 30 years into the past, where a hired gun awaits. Someone like Joe, who one day learns the mob wants to 'close the loop' by transporting back Joe's future self.

  1. Brief review: This felt like Pulp Fiction meets Time Cop meets The Omen.

Longer review: I think the hype leading up to this film, although not on the same level as films such as Prometheus or The Avengers, did it no favours. Billing it as 'This decades Matrix' was always dangerous and the Hollywood press machine should be ashamed. Had I gone into this film with zero expectations, I might be less critical.

What I loved: I loved Johnsons semi-real future, the acting was at a high level and the tension and slow pace were all something we haven't seen in the time travel genre all too much and it worked well. I loved the concept of the 30 years in-between then and now and I loved the banter between old and young Bruce.

There were flashes of time-travel genius as the future Looper who is set free starts to lose fingers and limbs. Also when Old Bruce follows young Bruce because he knows what transpires was what I was fully ready for (very BTTF 2).

What I didn't love: The 30 year overview could have been much longer and needed to set up Old Bruce's love for the wife stronger as this was the conflict/motivation for all that transpires.

I would have like to see 'the Rain Maker' in the future, although the fact that Old Bruce's reign of terror was far simpler and human than 'gotta stop the end of the world' kind of thing was a nice twist.

Telekinesis seemed to become more important than time travel and it seemed as though more could be done around this, using Old Bruces knowledge of what transpires to move around.

In the end it felt like 2 movies fighting against one another, and perhaps that was the intent. One was more drama, the other more gun-fight.

    Good, fell short of great.

  2. For telekinesis and time travel to become prominent within a thirty year period from a modern day setting was too much for me. If it was a lot further in the future or just one of these momentous discoveries it would have been much easier for me to involved and taken more on a journey.

    Good though.

  3. The best outing for Bruce Willis' combover since Death Becomes Her. Fast, slick punchy Sci-Fi that didn't give you any time to wonder what time it was or whether to leave your seat to offload the pint you had before the movie. Time-travel movies always have holes in them; however, they rarely have a 5 year old more terrifying than Yoda on steroids or a golf-buggy as the main getaway vehicle. So, all in all good entertainment if not groundbreaking.
